Zaobserwowano trzy rodzaje transformacji wysokotemperaturowej fazy austenitycznej do niskotemperaturowej fazy martenzytycznej, zgodnie z sekwencją: L21->10M, L21->14M i L21->2M. W stopach o dużej zawartości Cu, powyżej 8 %at. pomiędzy płytkami martenzytu zaobserwowano wydzielenia drugiej fazy.

Abstract

The Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloys are extensively studied materials due to, their unique functional properties such as magnetic field induced strain effect. This effect is based on the twin boundary motion induced by an external magnetic field that as a consequence results in a macroscopic materials shape change. However, this phenomenon only takes place in materials, where twinning stress is smaller than the stress produced by external magnetic field. Moreover, the main drawbacks for industrial application of this alloys are low operating temperatures and brittleness. It is well-known that the functional properties of this alloys can be tuned by composition adjustment.

The first part of dissertation concerns the description of thermoelastic martensitic transformation, the occurrence of which allows to observe the shape memory effect. In the following chapters the mechanism of the magnetic shape memory effect was presented and further emphasis the role of composition adjustments and production methods in modifying the functional properties of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys.

In the second experimental part, the influence of chemical composition modification i.e. replacement of Ni by Co in Ni55-xMn25Ga20Cox and Ga by Cu in Ni50Mn25Ga25-xCux on microstructure, crystal structure, lattice parameters and martensitic transformation temperature, have been examined. In this case bulk alloys were manufactured using conventional arc-melting method.

The largest experimentally verified MFIS has been recorded in single crystal materials. However, the technology to grow single crystals is not widely available and it is also quite time consuming, which may become a strong barrier for large scale industrial applications. Lately, there is an increasing interest to produce these functional materials using different production techniques. In the next part of the work, for production of multicomponent Ni-Mn-Ga-Co-Cu Heusler alloy melt-spinning technique was used. In the melt-spun ribbons, Then subsequent analysis of: microstructure, crystal structure, magnetization, martensitic transformation temperature, mechanical tests were performed, as well as the influence of annealing was thoroughly examined.
All materials were characterized by means of several techniques.

The microstructural observation were performed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Structure of alloys were investigated by X-ray diffraction technique. Characteristic martensitic transformation temperatures were estimated by means of differential scanning calorimetry and vibrating sample magnetometry.
The results shows that the addition of Cu instead of Ga has an important influence on the type of crystal structure observed at room temperature. Three types of transformations from high temperature austenitic L21 phase to low temperature martensitic phase were detected, according to sequence: L21->10M, L21->14M and L21->2M. For high amount of Cu above 8 atomic percent, among the martensitic plates, precipitation of the second phase was observed. Comparing the influence of substitution of Ni by Co or Ga by Cu an important conclusions can be drawn. The addition of Co instead of Ni does not change the type of martensite structure, which turned out to be the 2M martensite. However, this chemical modification leads to a significant reduction of lattice parameters (c/a ratio), but also an undesirable effect takes place of a decrease of the martensitic transformation temperature. The negative effect by adding Co to alloy could be compensate by addition of Cu, which have strongly increases the martensitic transformation temperature.

The microstructure of as-cast ribbons turned out to be highly anisotropic evolving from small equiaxed grains at the contact side (CS), to columnar grains in the middle and finally to dendritic grains at the non-contact side (NCS). The as-grown ribbons possessed a multiphase microstructure composed of 2M martensite, L21 austenite and the 14M structure. Two different stages of annealing were found for the Ni-Mn-Ga-Co-Cu as-cast ribbons. The annealing at 1173 K significantly changed the overall microstructure and phase composition of the as-cast ribbons. Apart from the significant grain growth, the thickness of the martensitic plates also increased. Moreover, the initial multiphase microstructure, consisting of L21 austenite and two martensitic phases (2M and 14M), changed into a single phase of 2M structure. The lower temperature annealing at 823 K had a lesser effect on the initial microstructure of the as-cast ribbons. The three different regions of equiaxed, columnar and dendritic grains, present previously in the as-cast state, were still observed. Also, the x-ray diffraction data did not indicate any significant changes upon heating at this temperature. However, the TEM observations revealed that the initial high dislocation density of the as-cast ribbons was substantially reduced upon heating. The magnetic moment measurements revealed that upon the applied heat treatments, a significant increase of magnetization occurred. Due to, the applied annealing procedure, the Ni-Mn-Ga-Co-Cu melt-spun ribbons were finally composed of a single 2M martensite phase that were characterized by large grains and thick martensitic plates. As a result of the heat treatment, Ni-Mn-Ga-Co-Cu ribbons appear as potential candidates for MFIS application.
