Niniejsza rozprawa dotyczy wytwarzania kompozytów drogą metalurgii proszków złożonej z mielenia kompozycji proszkowych (miedź + nanorurki węglowe) w planetarnym młynie kulowym, a następnie zagęszczaniu proszków do postaci masywnej wykorzystując dwie metody wysokotemperaturowe: jednoosiowe spiekanie w próżni oraz spiekanie plazmowe. Proces mielenia przeprowadzono dla kompozycji proszkowych z 1 i 3% obj. CNT stosując czas mielenia do 32 godzin. Dodatek nanorurek węglowych w ilości 3 % obj. powoduje prawie siedmiokrotny wzrost wytrzymałości oraz dwukrotny wzrost plastyczności kompozytów w porównaniu do czystej miedzi otrzymanej tą sama technologią.

3% obj. CNT przez 8 godzin a następnie spiekane plazmowo posiadają najlepszą kombinację właściwości mechanicznych i przewodności elektrycznej w porównaniu do wszystkich innych przebadanych, a w szczególności do czystej miedzi.

Abstract

The subject of the doctoral dissertation is the production and characterization of the microstructure and properties of composites based on copper matrix reinforced with multi-wall carbon nanotubes. At present, the structural forms of carbon like graphene, fullerenes and carbon nanotubes have found a great deal of research interest due to their unique properties, in particular as reinforcing phases in composites. An important element is the homogenous distribution of these phases in the matrix of the composite and the appropriate connection at the interface. These two elements affect the final properties of the composite the most.

This dissertation concerns the preparation of composites by powder metallurgy consisting of milling powder compositions (copper + carbon nanotubes) in a planetary ball mill, and then sintering powders to a massive form using two methods: vacuum sintering and plasma sintering. The milling process was performed for two powder compositions with
1 and 3 vol. % CNT using a milling time of up to 32 hours. As a result of microstructural analysis of milled powders after different milling times, it was found that the eighth hourly milling was the most appropriate, after which the copper crystals were refinement to the nanometer range, moderate oxidation of copper powders and defect of nanotubes. Compaction processes of milled powder allowed to produce bulk materials with an average porosity of about 2%, which does not depend strongly on the milling time and the amount of carbon nanotubes. Compression tests of sintered samples showed that the yield stress of the composite with 3 vol. % CNT milled 8 hours and uniaxial pressed, is about 449 MPa while for sintered by SPS 510 MPa. The main reason for the above difference is the difference in porosity, respectively 2.2% and 1% of these materials, because they have a similar size of the grains of about 250 nm. Addition of carbon nanotubes in the amount of 3 vol. % causes almost seven-fold increase in strength and a twofold increase in the plasticity of composites compared to pure copper obtained with the same technology. The conducted specific resistance tests showed that the presence of oxides and pores strongly affects the transport of electric charges. In the case of a plasma sintered sample, the specific resistivity was 1.91 x 10-8 Ω·m and the single-axis compression 3.37 x 10-8 Ω·m.

Summarising, the dissertation on the basis of systematic studies showed that the composites produced by milling copper powders with the addition of 3 vol. % CNT for 8 hours and then sintered by SPS method have the best combination of mechanical properties and electrical conductivity compared to all other tested, and in particular to pure copper.
